Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine<\/h3>\n

Since its inception in 1982, the Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine has been integral to Patan Hospital, initially functioning as an Emergency Room. As healthcare demands increased, the department expanded its services to include outpatient care through Male, Female, and Under-14 clinics. This growth reflected the rising importance of General Practice in healthcare. In collaboration with Institute of Medicine, the first ever residency program MDGP was started at Patan hospital in the year 1992. Besides, in collaboration with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), the department launched the General Practice residency program in 2005. Both of this program was later handed over to respective institution from the inception of Patan Academy of Health sciences in the year 2008. The integration of general practice with emergency care has solidified the department\u2019s role as a cornerstone of the hospital.<\/p>\n

Since 2018, the department has embarked on a journey of academic excellence with the launch of its own postgraduate program. Anchored in the core values of competency-based education and aligned with the mission and vision of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), the department is committed to delivering quality healthcare while continuously innovating its educational practices.<\/p>\n

Services Offered<\/h4>\n

The department prides itself on providing comprehensive and accessible healthcare services, balancing both routine care and urgent, critical care. The services include:<\/p>\n

  1. Outpatient Services: 8am- 4pm<\/strong><\/li>\n

    • Male Clinic, Female Clinic, and Pediatric (Under-14) Clinic provide care six and five days a week, respectively. Together, they handle around 300 patients daily and see approximately 75,000 patients annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    • Chronic Care Clinic:<\/strong><\/li>\n

      • This clinic operates every Tuesday and focuses on long-term longitudinal care for chronic conditions like Diabetes, Hypertension, COPD, Bronchial Asthma as well as palliative care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      • General Practice Clinic:<\/strong><\/li>\n
          \n
        • Services include patient care, medical certification, and health screening and promotive health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        • Emergency Services:<\/strong><\/li>\n
            \n
          • Open 24 hours a day, the emergency department manages over 180 patients daily, attending to nearly 50,000 emergency cases annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          • Triage:<\/strong><\/li>\n

            • A 24-hour triage system ensures the prioritization of patients based on urgency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            • Disaster Management:<\/strong><\/li>\n

              • The department leads in disaster preparedness, pioneering innovations in disaster medicine through training, table-top exercises, and drills to maintain seamless operations during crises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ol>\n

                    Additionally, a Common Academic Day is held in collaboration with various departments every two weeks, covering key topics such as medical ethics, communication, and research.<\/p>\n

                    The department also prioritizes patient safety through the development of protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring high standards of care.<\/p>\n

                        • In line with the institution\u2019s philosophy of expanding access to healthcare, residents are posted to various provincial hospitals, including Sindhuli, and Dhading hospitals, fostering a collaborative approach to enhancing healthcare delivery in Bagmati province.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
